Chelsea suffered defeat in the all-Premier League showdown against Brighton and crashed out of the FA Cup in the process. As a result, the Blues’ wait to lift the trophy for the first time since 2018 goes on.
Enzo Maresca's side took the lead in the fourth round tie as early as the fifth minute when Bart Verbruggen somehow bundled a tame Cole Palmer cross into his own net. However, the Seagulls - who were thumped 7-0 by Nottingham Forest last time out - did not fold and were level seven minutes later thanks to a brilliant header from Georginio Rutter.
Rutter turned provider for Brighton’s winner as Kauro Mitoma produced a clever finish in the second half to knock Chelsea out and spark jubilant scenes from the home supporters inside the Amex Stadium after the final whistle.
The two teams meet again in the Premier League next week but Brighton will now await their opponents in the fifth round when the draw is made on Monday evening as Chelsea now focus on a top-four finish and success in the Conference League. Read the game back below with our dedicated match blog.

Chelsea Reaction
Standard Sport’s very own Malik Ouzia has delivered his verdict on Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round...
Chelsea player ratings
Cole Palmer 5
Could not believe his luck when Bart Verbruggen bundled his tame cross in but well below his best otherwise. Hooked a chance not dissimilar to Mitoma’s well wide.
Jadon Sancho 4
A thoroughly underwhelming display from the Englishman.
Christopher Nkunku 4
In theory Chelsea’s only fit striker but showed why Maresca considers him a No10. Spent too much time dropping deep when Chelsea needed a focal point.

Getty ImagesChelsea have been knocked out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage after losing to Brighton despite taking an early lead.
Chelsea were in front after five minutes thanks to a nightmare moment for Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen.
Cole Palmer latched onto Jadon Sancho’s pass and fizzed the ball into the middle, but Verbruggen somehow spilled it over his own goal-line and was duly credited with an own goal after some really poor goalkeeping.
Perhaps fearing the worst after conceding seven goals away at Nottingham Forest, the Seagulls produced a great response.
