Editorial Policy

How Evening Standard selects, reports, checks and corrects its journalism.

Evening Standard publishes a Canadian edition covering news, politics, business, sport and culture. This page explains how our newsroom works, so readers, sources and other publications can understand the standards behind what we publish.

How stories are selected

We choose stories on news value, relevance to Canadian readers, and the public interest. Editorial decisions are made independently by our newsroom. No advertiser, partner or outside party determines what we cover or how we cover it.

How we report and check facts

News articles are based on publicly available information, direct sources, official statements, and attributed third-party reporting. We verify claims against primary sources where possible, link to source material so readers can check it themselves, and seek comment from the subjects of critical reporting where appropriate.

Opinion versus reporting

We separate news from comment. Opinion and analysis articles are labelled clearly and reflect the views of their named author, not a position of the publication. News reporting is written to be factual and impartial.

Corrections

We correct errors promptly and transparently. When a correction is made, we add a dated note to the article explaining what was changed. If you believe an article contains a factual error, please see our Corrections Policy.

Use of AI tools

Editorial judgement, reporting and final responsibility rest with people. Where automated tools assist with tasks such as research, transcription, formatting or summarising, the output is reviewed by an editor before publication. We do not publish unreviewed AI-generated articles.

Sponsored content

Any sponsored, partnered or paid content is clearly labelled as such and kept separate from independent editorial coverage. Advertising never influences news judgement.
