New E-Class breaks cover

Here comes the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The fifth-generation model has been designed to appeal to a younger audience but, at the same time, it shares more of its design with the new C-Class and S-Class so that the line-up looks more of a family affair.

Although the wheelbase has been lengthened, the new car hasn’t gone down the usual route of making everything bigger. In fact, it’s lower and narrower than the previous model. It’s also lighter, thanks to a lightweight platform that can shave up to 100kg off the kerbweight.

The cabin will be uprated with a totally digital instrument cluster and two 12.3in infotainment screens – this applies to all but entry level models. Apple Carplay and Android Auto functionality is standard, as is a wireless charging mat and a USB port. But the most interesting electronic element is the Drive Pilot.

This new E-Class is the first model to feature the range of semi-autonomous driving functions. It has a variety of functions, including allowing you to follow the car ahead, and it can intervene with steering and braking changes if it detects a possible collision. It can also handle remote parking and lane changing.

At launch there will be a choice of two engines, although in time this should rise to a range of eight. At launch you will have the choice of a 2.0-litre four-pot diesel in the E220d. This will give 192bhp and 295lb ft of torque, with a claimed 72.4mpg and 102g/km of CO2.

Or there will be a 3.0-litre straight six diesel in the E350d. This gives 254bhp and a substantial 457lb ft of torque, with fuel consumption claimed at 55.4mpg and 133g/km of CO2.

Prices are expected to be £35,935 for the E220d SE, with the E350d starting at £44,930. Options will include adjustable air suspension. Deliveries should start this summer.
