Dressing up with Tinie Tempah

For the average British man, David Beckham is an inspiration. When I met him at the Olympics I gave him a look that said, ‘Yo, you’re the man. We need to try and hang.’ And he gave me the same look back.

I always do up the top button on a suit jacket and leave the bottom one undone. I recently went out and realised that I was missing my top button, so I pulled off the bottom one, too. I’d rather have no buttons than do it up incorrectly.

Michael Jackson had one of the best voices, but he also made a lot of effort with how he looked when he performed. He made me realise you need to make yourself stand out on stage.

For my last UK arena tour I wore a bespoke silver suit by Clothsurgeon. It was made with reflective material so as soon as the light touched it, it went crazy. I wish I could wear it every night; I’d feel like the man.

I admire Pharrell’s style. I like how he made the Vivienne Westwood mountain hat a thing.

As a young man, one of the biggest myths is that you have to spend lots of money to look good. If I wear a Zara tracksuit with Céline slip-ons, everyone thinks I’m wearing Balmain. Men shouldn’t be scared of high street shops.

I wore a midnight blue Burberry tuxedo with a velvet jacket to perform at the BAFTAs. High-fiving Prince William was completely spontaneous. I wish I’d had his number so I could have texted him beforehand to say, ‘Yo, giving you the heads up, I’m going to give you a high-five, just give me one back,’ but it wasn’t like that.

Prince Charles is the definition of a Prince Charming. He makes such an effort when it comes to tailoring. I love how conscious he is about buying woollen suits and how much it does for British businesses.

I’m getting better at buying clothes for women. I like girls who look good dressed down with a pair of pumps or some Converse and a long shirt with chunky jewellery, as well as the fancy dressers in high heels.

When I sat next to Harry Styles at the Burberry show we didn’t really talk about style, we were just discussing the models, pointing out which ones we liked most.

My glasses have become part of my silhouette. I have 100 pairs and they’re all kept in organised boxes. It’s quite OCD.
