Christopher Lee, who wrote the radio series This Sceptred Isle and the book Monarchy: Past, Present... and Future?, argues that the accusation of lavishness does not stick, especially when you consider the value of the monarchy to the nation. The monarch is head of state and of the legislature, head of the nation’s largest family business with an estimated brand value of £5bn, chief ambassador for UK plc, head of the Church of England and the Armed Forces, philanthropist-in-chief, head of state of the Overseas Realms and, in the Queen’s case, head of the Commonwealth. ‘It would only seem lavish if you don’t consider why you’ve got the monarchy and what it is,’ he says.
