There have been countless takes on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Victorian novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde over the years, but a new spin on the source material is coming soon from acclaimed writer Charlie Higson.

The author of the Young James Bond novels has re-imagined the classic tale of a scientist who unwittingly unleashes his primal alter-ego into a sort of Victorian superhero story.

Using Stevenson’s novel as a jumping-off point, the ten-episode ITV series will see Jekyll (and Hyde of course) battling ghouls, zombies, werewolves and vampires, with Tom Bateman in the lead role, and a supporting cast including Richard E Grant and Natalie Gumede.

Take a look at an extended preview clip of Jekyll facing off against some shadowy foes while struggling, Hulk-like, to contain his powers.

ITV said: “The drama follows [Jekyll’s] path to discovery, which coincides with the transformative powers of his condition growing stronger and more disruptive. His journey will take him into a dark and unforgiving place, as his alter ego seems capable of anything. At the same time there are shadowy forces trying to find Jekyll and the source of his powers.”

The series, which was shot in London between February and July this year, is set to air this Autumn.
