Kate Barmby has become the latest contestant to leave the Great British Bake Off in a controversial new round.

“I knew it was me,” Barmby uttered as the result came in.

Speaking after her departure, she said: “I don’t think I’ve completely humiliated myself –there’s been some fantastic bakes in amongst some of the shocking ones.

“I’m not going to cry because it’s over – because I’m going to get to watch it now and see who finishes this journey.”

Judge Paul Hollywood said: “Is Kate the weakest baker out of the group? No she isn’t. But this weekend, she was. That’s how Bake Off works.”

The competitor was sent home in a week that seemed to stretch the definition of baking.

The introduction of ‘Batter Week’ saw the bakers making Yorkshire puddings in an oven – before moving on to fried pancaked and churros.

Benjamina Ebuehi was named Star Baker, impressing Mary Berry with her showstopper.

“I’ve conquered the batter! Really, really, really happy,” she said.

However, the new round was controversial with some viewers, who questioned whether frying pancakes really counts as baking.

Next week will move back to more familiar territory with pastry week.
