Coronation Street fans were left devastated after a heartbroken Johnny Connor discovered the body of his son Aidan Connor.

Viewers were beside themselves with emotion as Shayne Ward’s last Corrie scenes were aired on Monday evening , with his final scene showing Aidan crying uncontrollably in his flat before taking his own life, which was not shown.

Realising Aidan hadn’t opened up the factory at the start of Wednesday’s episode, Johnny went to his son’s flat and soon found a note reading “don’t go in the bathroom, call the police”.

As he walked into the bathroom off camera, screams could be heard as he discovered Aidan, prompting ITV viewers to comment on social media on the emotional scene

One wrote: "I don't think I've ever had a lump in my throat as large as I did during this scene. #corrie."

While another said: "Only 3 minutes in and I am sobbing my heart out #Corrie."

"This is so so sad. What a subject to tackle," posted somebody else.

Monday’s scenes were branded the “most upsetting episode” by some viewers while others praised the soap opera for highlighting suicide and, in particular, male suicide rates.

During the episodes, Aidan went to see ex-girlfriend Eva Price to tell her that he knew about their daughter, Susie, who is now in the care of Toyah Battersby and Peter Barlow.

The former lovers shared a dance – something they never got to do after failing to make it up the aisle – before Aidan left to return to Johnny and his wife Jenny’s leaving party, making sure Eva knew he loved her.

Aidan’s final scene saw him crying hysterically in his flat, alone, as the screen faded to black. No element of suicide was shown.
