Workforce options open after Sandown spin

Derby winner Workforce produced a polished performance in a racecourse gallop at Sandown this morning but connections continue to adopt a wait-and-see policy over his participation in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday week.

The son of King's Best ran too freely when fifth to Sir Michael Stoute-trained stablemate Harbinger when last seen in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July. But equipped with a new rubber bridle to help him settle, Workforce moved smoothly over an extended mile under Ryan Moore, along with stable companions Official Style and Confront, and drew five lengths clear.

Owner Khalid Abdulla's racing manager, Lord Teddy Grimthorpe, said: "There is no decision yet. He worked pleasingly, quickened up nicely and stretched out well.

"Now we have to wait until we see how he comes out of it, to show us how he has taken it mentally, as well as physically. We are trying to get him in the right frame of mind. Workforce is an important horse and we won't run for the sake of it.

"So the decision is still pending. He ticked a box this morning but as for a green light, we will leave it as late as we possibly can."

Meanwhile, Canford Cliffs is "in flying form" ahead of Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, according to jockey Richard Hughes. The Richard Hannon-trained colt has won the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes this season.
