Travelling German hooligans who went on the rampage before a friendly against Slovenia in Celje will not be allowed to spoil the World Cup next year, the country's sport minister, Otto Schily, promised yesterday.
Schily said: 'These rioters are a blemish for Germany but the police will ensure that they won't destroy the world ' s most beautiful celebration of soccer.'
Michael Hughes last night rejected claims that he had let down Northern Ireland in their hour of need. Veteran playmaker Hughes has ignored manager Lawrie Sanchez's SOS appeal to bolster the team for tomorrow's do-or-die World Cup qualifier against Poland in Warsaw. He wants to focus on keeping Crystal Palace in the Premiership.
Hughes, 33, said: 'For people to turn around and question my commitment is out of order. I have not quit. The way it was left was that I would come back as captain for the Germany game in June and we would take it from there.'
