Uefa all-star squad!

Greece captain Theodoros Zagorakis was today named UEFA's player of Euro 2004.

The AEK Athens midfielder was a key figure in his country's stunning championship triumph which was sealed with a 1-0 win over Portugal at the Estadio da Luz last night.

Zagorakis, 32, who spent three seasons at Leicester City, appeared in all eight of Greece's qualifiers for Euro 2004 and then played a vital holding role as his side kept clean sheets against France, Czech Republic and Portugal in the latter stages.

He was chosen as the event's top performer by UEFA's technical study group which is led by former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh and includes leading coaches Roy Hodgson, Gerard Houllier, Jozef Venglos and Berti Vogts.

The group also selected a 23-man "all-star" squad for the tournament which features the best players for each position.

Despite only reaching the quarterfinals, four England players are in the squad - Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell and Frank Lampard. There is, however, no place for David Beckham following a string of disappointing performances, but Real Madrid team-mates Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo are both selected.

To reinforce the miserable showing of Europe's traditional elite, the squad features just one Frenchman, one German, one Italian, one Dutchman and not a single Spaniard. Apart from the England quartet, the Premiership has five other players on the list - Chelsea's Petr Cech, Liverpool's Milan Baros, Aston Villa's Olof Mellberg and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

As European champions, Greece are the most represented nation in the "all-star" squad with five players ahead of England (four), Portugal (four) and Czech Republic (three).
