Roberto Carlos: Chelsea want me

Roberto Carlos today claimed he has had an offer from Chelsea - but still hopes to win a new deal with Real Madrid.

The World Cup winner, one of six 'Galacticos' on the books at the Bernabeu, insists his heart still lies with Madrid, who conceded their Spanish title to Valencia at the weekend.

The 31-year-old told the Onda Cero radio station that his advisers had been contacted by Chelsea.

"I have not spoken directly with anybody but people from Chelsea spoke to my lawyers," he said. It is reported that a three-year deal, worth £ 4million annually, was offered.

But the Brazilian, who has a history of making extravagant claims linking him with the Premiership when he is in contract negotiations, said he hoped to remain with Madrid.

"I'm happy here and people know that. My aim is to keep playing until I am 38 and I want to spend five of those in Madrid and then the last two in Brazil with Santos. I want a four-year contract. The club have given me two options but I want to hold out for four years.

"I want to speak to Jorge Valdano, the director of football, and president Florentino Perez next week and sort out my future before going on holiday." Meanwhile, Gianfranco Zola has put a return to Chelsea on hold until the end of the season in order to concentrate on Cagliari's promotion push.

One player, however, who looks certain to leave Stamford Bridge is Juan Veron.

Chelsea favourite Zola has the opportunity to return to Stamford Bridge in a possible coaching role next season, but could also complete a dream return to Serie A with his hometown club.
