Hoddle in Qatar for talks over new job

Glenn Hoddle has been approached to manage a team in Qatar. The former Tottenham manager, sacked two weeks ago, flew out to Doha last night with his agent Dennis Roach to discuss the deal.

It is not known yet whether he is in talks with a club team or the national side, which is currently coached by Frenchman Philippe Troussier. However, it is unlikely to be the latter as Troussier has only recently been appointed.

Large amounts of money have been invested in the Qatar league and several of the world's top stars nearing the end of their careers, including Steffen Effenberg, Romario and Frank Leboeuf, have gone there for a final pay-day. Hoddle could command a salary in excess of £2million a year.

Meanwhile, First Division Reading, who twice interviewed Hoddle for their managerial vacancy, today appointed Steve Coppell to the post.

Coppell has left Second Division Brighton and signed a deal with the Royals until the end of next season.

Coppell's predecessor at the Madejski Stadium, Alan Pardew, has been told he won't be able to take charge of his new club, West Ham, until their game against Nottingham Forest on 22 October.
