Josh Onomah was on Friday poised to join Aston Villa on loan for the season, with the Championship club hoping to register the Tottenham midfielder in time for Saturday’s meeting with Hull.

Onomah has been part of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad for the last two seasons but the Spurs boss has decided he would make better progress playing elsewhere.

The 20-year-old midfielder has made 32 appearances for Spurs but has yet to start in the Premier League. He was also part of England’s successful Under-20 World Cup-winning squad during the summer.

It is an interesting move for Onomah, as Pochettino usually prefers to keep his most promising youngsters at Hotspur Way, rather than allow them to join clubs in the Football League.

Yet Onomah’s opportunities this season were likely to be limited. Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen occupy the attacking midfield positions behind Harry Kane, while Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks will fight for the central roles.

Meanwhile, German midfielder Max Meyer has been proposed to various clubs in England but he is not thought currently to be a target for Spurs.
