Crystal Palace's Scott Dann is one of four uncapped Premier League players that would have earned a place in the latest England team if Roy Hodgson's selection was based purely on statistics.

The 28-year-old, who scored the south Londoners' winner against Liverpool prior to the international break, has been a key figure in Palace's encouraging start to the campaign.

But calls for the Merseyside-born defender to be recognised at international level fell on deaf ears as Hodgson chose tried and tested options for the upcoming friendlies against Spain and France.

Yet with statistics rather than 'big club bias' or reputation taken into account, the Eagles defender deserved to soar into the squad with an EA Sports Player Performance index of 196; more than any English defender in the top tier.

West Ham left back Aaron Cresswell also deserved to be given a chance to make his Three Lions debut, according to the numbers, but has been overlooked by the Croydon-born manager.

Leicester City's Jamie Vardy may well lead the nation's front line due to his outstanding early season form, but the striker should also be joined in the side by two of his Foxes teammates.

Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton may not be household names but the duo's performances for Claudio Ranieri's side have comfortably put them among the four best midfielders the nation has to offer.
