Pep Guardiola has often said he wishes he could pick every player and that the hardest part of football is leaving someone out.

Well the new substitute rules will at least give him chance to keep his star-studded Manchester City squad happy when top flight football returns.

Clubs will be allowed to use five subs when the season restarts next week – up from two – to help cope with the demands of a hectic fixture list, as well as naming nine players on the bench.

And with Leroy Sane ready to return from knee ligament damage, City will have bewildering options to pick from up front.

Along with Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus, Sane makes up one of the most devastating attacks in world football.

And with two extra subs to call upon, Guardiola will be able to turn the screw on opponents like never before.

But perhaps it is someone like Phil Foden who will benefit most when matches kick back in.

So often overlooked by Guardiola, there will be little excuse not to give him more minutes as the games come thick and fast and the City manager looks to protect his players from overload.

Guardiola has promised Foden he will be given chance to fill the soon-to-be-created void from David Silva’s impending exit.

This could be his chance to truly stake his claim.
