Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen believes midfielder Harry Winks can follow in the footsteps of Harry Kane and Dele Alli by becoming a star of the first team.

Winks’ reputation is growing quickly. He signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal last week — his second new contract in the space of five months — and has made 27 appearances this season, impressing consistently in midfield.

Vertonghen said: “He’s a great player and for me, he can be the next Dele Alli or Harry Kane. There is lots of competition in midfield but he’ll be a very good player for Tottenham over the years. He has improved.”

Winks impressed during Tottenham’s 3-0 victory over Fulham in the FA Cup last weekend, and with their place booked in this season’s quarter-finals, Vertonghen is hoping Spurs can pick up at least one piece of silverware this season.

“I think this team and the technical staff deserve a trophy with this club. I won some silverware when I was at Ajax and it is the best thing there is in football.

“We played the Capital One Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley two years ago [which Chelsea won 2-0] and we want more of that. We are a lot stronger than then.”
