Arsenal will wear their customary red shirts and white shorts in Sunday’s EFL Cup Final after the Football League and clubs had a change of heart over their kit plans.
A post on the EFL website yesterday confirmed that Arsenal would wear red shorts and socks for the Wembley showpiece so as not to clash with Manchester City, who wear white shorts and socks.
On only one occasion in the past 39 years have Arsenal donned red shorts and socks – December’s 1-1 draw at West Brom – and the decision to change their attire for Wembley prompted a furious reaction from Gunners fans.
However the Football League has opted to reverse its initial decision, though Arsenal will still wear red socks. Manchester City will wear their traditional sky blue shirts, white shorts and sky blue socks.

An EFL spokesperson said: “After due consideration, it has been decided that Arsenal and Manchester City will both wear white shorts in Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final.
“Arsenal were initially scheduled to wear red shorts, but it is the shared view of the EFL and the Clubs that both teams should be able to wear their recognised first team colours in such an occasion as a major domestic Cup Final so long as it doesn’t cause problems for the match officials.”
Prior to the draw at West Brom on December 31 Arsenal had last donned a predominantly red kit in an away game against QPR on April 11, 1978.
