I am sometimes asked how much footballers are affected by off-field events at their clubs.

The answer is simple: they worry when it looks like they might not be paid.

That might seem selfish but I would suggest it is similar to most people in most jobs.

So I don’t imagine that the reports this week regarding Watford will have made much of an impression on their players.

As long as the club are not at risk, though, a player cannot afford to worry until it has a direct impact on him. That is the way of the world.

Players want to get on with their job in as stress-free an environment as possible, so I’d be very surprised if this had even been mentioned in the squad.
