Gareth Southgate is pleased with how Calum Chambers has progressed at Arsenal but is keen to give the defender game time for England's Under-21 side.
The 20-year-old has struggled to force his way into Arsene Wenger's team this season and has made just six appearances in all competitions.
Chambers has three senior England caps to his name but was unable to claim a place in Roy Hodgson's latest squad for the friendlies against Spain and France.
Southgate is unconcerned by Chambers' lack of first-team action as he is confident Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is the right man to develop the youngster's talent.
"He is at a club that is one of the top two in the country.

Although Chambers is not a central figure at club level Southgate is adamant that the defender is key to his England Under-21 set up.
"He is important for us. At the moment he is in the transition of becoming a central defender from a full back.
"I still think he can be a very good full back."
Southgate also believes that an opportunity to play for the Young Lions will give Chambers a confidence boost as he aims to force his way into contention at the Emirates Stadium.
"He is similar to Jesse Lingard at Manchester United and Jack Butland.
"Sometimes the Under-21s gives players the experience and game time they need."
