Begovic says the players rather than Jose Mourinho are to blame for Chelsea’s poor start to the season.

Chelsea take on Maccabi Tel Aviv in their opening game of the Champions League tonight with Mourinho under increasing pressure following the club’s worst start to a top-flight campaign for 29 years with three defeats in five matches.

The form has been so poor, there is already speculation that Mourinho’s job is under threat just a month after signing a new four-year contract.

But asked if the players should take responsibility for what has happened, goalkeeper Begovic said: “Absolutely. Everyone looks at himself, first and foremost, to see what he can do better.

“It’s difficult to pinpoint one thing we could have done better, but we look at ourselves. We have to work harder, play better and the results will improve.

“The manager has led from the front from the first day. He’s as motivated as ever. He’s prepared well, but things have not gone our way. We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves. We have confidence things will turn around. We’re behind him [Mourinho]. We can remember what this team are capable of.”
