Five other upsets that rocked sport

Tokyo, 11 Feb 1990 James 'Buster' Douglas was a 42-1 outsider against undisputed world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, the two-fisted young American who was unbeaten in 37 fights and who had knocked out 33 of his opponents. Yet Douglas cleverly used his longer reach to keep Tyson on the end of a jab and then climbed from the canvas at the end of the eighth round to stop his rival in the 10th with a great four-punch combination.

PAUL LAWRIE

Carnoustie, 15-18 July 1999 Local hero Paul Lawrie, ranked 159th in the world, won a bizarre Open Championship after Jean Van de Velde, who was challenging to become the first French winner of the major since 1907, blew a three-shot lead going into the final hole. Van de Velde's triple bogey, carded after he had gone paddling for his ball in Barry Burn, led to a four-hole play-off for the title that was eventually won in fading light by a shocked but delighted Scot.

IRELAND vs WEST INDIES

Sion Hills, 2 July 1969 The mighty West Indies, in England for a Test series, made a short trip to Northern Ireland for what seemed an easy practice match. Clive Lloyd decided to bat first on a wet, green wicket and what happened next was abject humiliation. The scorecard tells the story: Camacho 1; Carew 0; Foster 2; Butcher 2; Lloyd 1; Walcott 6; Shepherd 0; Findlay 0; Roberts 0; Shillingford 9no; Blair 3; extras 1. The total? A paltry 25. The Irish knocked off the runs for the loss of just one wicket.

NORTH KOREA vs ITALY

Ayresome Park, 19 July 1966 Italy, who were among the favourites to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy, went into the game against rank outsiders North Korea knowing a draw would almost certainly earn them a place in the second round. But they were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when the influential midfielder Giacomo Bulgarelli was forced off with a knee injury - no substitutes back then - and 10 minutes later Park Doo-Ik scored the only goal of the game.

US vs SOVIET UNION

Lake Placid, 22 Feb 1980 The 'Miracle on Ice', in which America's team of college student amateurs beat a Soviet Union ice hockey team that hadn't lost in Olympic competition since 1968. Indeed, two weeks before this semi-final, the Russians had crushed the Americans 10-3 in an exhibition match in New York. But it was a different matter at Lake Placid, where hero goalie Jim Craig made an incredible 36 saves. Two days later, the US beat Finland 4-2 to win the gold medal.
