Trescothick won the man of the match award for his magnificent batting throughout, particularly his 219 in the first innings. However, South Africa captain Graeme Smith pinpointed Andrew Flintoff as the difference between the sides.
The burly all-rounder hammered a quickfire 95 yesterday morning to give England a vital first-innings lead. Smith said: "After day one we were in a strong position but all credit to England. They played the best cricket in the middle of the game and Freddie took the game away from us. One or two things went against us but that's Test cricket. I'm really proud of my team and it's been a fantastic series."
Flintoff was named England's man of the series for a number of excellent performances that confirmed his status as a Testclass all-rounder.
The Lancastrian is expected to bat at No6 on the winter tours following the retirement of Stewart, but says he prefers batting with the tail.
Flintoff said: "I like playing with the tail and I've got a definite role in the side. I've bowled a few overs and got the odd run. Playing with the tail gives you more freedom and I like to entertain."
