Left-arm paceman Amir, 23, is expected to play for Sui Southern Gas Corporation in the forthcoming domestic matches. If he performs well, he will be in the selectors’ thoughts for those preparation matches against England.
Although Amir is very unlikely to feature in the three Tests, Pakistan sources believe it is only a matter of time before he returns to international cricket.
While Amir’s fellow quick bowler Wahab Riaz is a mainstay of the Pakistan attack, he has lacked support in recent times.
Earlier this week, Amir apologised for his part in the spot-fixing scandal and signalled his intention to revive his career at the top level.
“Over the last five years I have had time to reflect on my previous behaviour and I sincerely apologise to all my fans for letting them down,” he said.
“However, I am ready to put this behind me and focus on my cricket. I still have a lot to give to cricket and am looking forward to resurrecting my international cricket presence.
“The support I have received from my family, friends and, importantly, my fans has been exceptional in this testing period. I shall make them proud once again.”
Both Butt and Asif can return to cricket on September 1 after their suspensions expire but there is little prospect of an immediate comeback for either. Pakistan cricket boss Najam Shethi said: “They will have to attend the rehabilitation programme of the Pakistan Cricket Board for two to three months.”
