Classy Jeffries cruises to a medal

Sunderland lightheavyweight Tony Jeffries today stormed into the semi-finals and guaranteed Great Britain's second boxing medal in Beijing with a 10-2 victory over Hungary's Imre Szello.

Jeffries had scraped through his first bout on the countback system but left nothing to chance, scoring with a string of right hands to establish a 9-2 lead going into the final round.

He was in cruise control and continued to dominate in the final round. Szello was given a standing eight count as Jeffries coasted all the way onto the podium.

Jeffries will now fight Dublin's Kenny Egan for a place in the final. The 26-year-old, who is an eight-time Irish champion, outclassed Brazil's Washington Silva 8-0.

Jeffries joins team captain David Price as being guaranteed a bronze medal. The Liverpool super-heavyweight now faces Italian Roberto Cammarelle in Friday's semi-final and says he has some unfinished business.

Price wants revenge after the Italian policeman beat him during qualification for the Athens Games.

Price was also lined up to fight Cammarelle at last year's world championships before the Liverpudlian broke his hand in the ring in a previous bout.
