Campion set for Twickenham clash

There will be new names on the Daily Mail Cups this season and spectators at Schools' Day on Saturday are in for a feast of top-class rugby if the semi-finals are anything to go by.

Campion School from Hornchurch, bidding to be the first southern team to win the Cup, have made it to Twickenham after losing four semi-finals. Opponents Durham also know what it is like to be the bridesmaids, having lost three semi-finals in four seasons.

It was not easy this time. Pangbourne College, who had enjoyed their most successful run in the competition, forced a 10-10 draw three weeks ago but Durham squeezed through 2-1 on tries with replacement Grant Lowes getting a late touchdown. Campion, one of Saracens' partner schools, are the comeback kings of the competition. They won their quarter-final against fancied St Peter's, Gloucester, 23-22 in the last minute and then beat favourites RGS Newcastle 17-16 with seconds to spare.

On both occasions, leading points scorer Michael Whitehead landed the winning kicks. No surprise then that the fly half is attracting interest from Premiership clubs.

The Under 15 Cup Final will be contested by two Surrey schools only six miles apart but meeting for the first time. Epsom College have reached the final in their debut season and, like Campion, won an epic semi-final 17-14 against Bradford Grammar School in the last minute. They had put out favourites Millfield in the quarter-finals with another inspired performance. But rivals John Fisher from Purley, another Saracens partner school, are a class act having scored more than 1,000 points in an unbeaten season.

King Henry VIII, Coventry, and Stowe are the finalists in the Under 18 Vase, making the most of their second chance having lost in the first round of the Cup. Both have made great strides during the season and look well matched.

Schools' Day provides a full day out at Twickenham. There are exhibition stands, demonstrations and entertainers in the West Car Park from 10.30am and on presentation of the souvenir programme, spectators can visit the world famous Museum of Rugby for £1.
