Beattie given a chance to shine

Chelsea trio Wayne Bridge, John Terry and Frank Lampard will tonight have their last chance to impress Sven-Goran Eriksson before next month's showdown with Turkey in Istanbul.

But the biggest surprise in England's starting line-up against Liechtenstein at Old Trafford is likely to be the inclusion of James Beattie.

Eriksson is keen to have a look at the Southampton striker before the Turkey match and he is expected to partner Michael Owen up front, with Wayne Rooney continuing to play behind the front two. Beattie played that position in yesterday's final training session, leaving Emile Heskey on the bench despite his encouraging substitute's display in Skopje.

Bridge, who last played for England in the 2-0 win over the Turks at Sunderland, will replace Ashley Cole, who has been criticised following last weekend's win in Macedonia.

Terry, who has played alongside Rio Ferdinand and then Sol Campbell in his two full games to date, looks certain to have another new defensive partner in Birmingham's Matthew Upson. Campbell was one of four England players on a yellow card. Nicky Butt is injured but the other two, captain David Beckham and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, look certain to play.

England coach Eriksson, mindful of Campbell's disciplinary turmoil this season, has decided to take him out of the firing line.
