'We discovered you could reinterpret songs in a way that wasn't detrimental to the original,' says Wale, 'but which offered the performers an opportunity to say something.' But, er, why choose such a seemingly perverse approach?
'We always set limits for ourselves,' says Manzer Allen. 'We were thinking, what is the furthest from the typical rock band we could get? A string quartet seemed to be it.'
They know there will be Smiths extremists outraged at the sacrilege, although Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr gave permission for the songs to be used. 'The fan websites have been talking about it for months,' growls Manzer Allen.
'Not always happily.' But, judging by the songs I saw rehearsed - the plaintive I Won't Share You and Rubber Ring, a bouncy B-side spun into a Sondheimy weepfest - fans should be delighted that these aren't mere tribute band facsimiles.
'They're songs that interest us and we'd like to do something interesting with them,' says Manzer Allen. 'The fact that somebody might actually hate it is clear. But that's true of anything. Not everybody likes Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.'
