Swell party at Serpentine

It is big, it is round, and if you watch carefully you might be lucky enough to see it grow.

This is the Serpentine's new summer pavilion which was shown off at the gallery's summer party last night.

Meanwhile, here are a couple of pictures of the very pregnant Linda Evangelista and Lisa B. Any resemblance is, of course, wholly coincidental.

Still, it was gratifying to see the two models warming to the theme with such dedication.

They were just two of the famous and the beautiful at the party that has established itself as one of the most glamorous and hotly anticipated events of the London summer.

Guests had a chance to rub shoulders with Elle Macpherson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jade Jagger and Mischa Barton - and to join in the fun game of the night, which involved coming up with the best description of Rem Koolhaas's £1 million pavilion.

Factually speaking its roof is a giant, helium-filled, translucent canopy, which will rise and fall depending on weather conditions. But that's just the starting point.

"It's beautiful, I love it. It's just like a lung," said Ms Scott Thomas.

Former Duran Duran member Nick Rhodes's actress girlfriend Meredith Ostrum described it as a "giant marshmallow".

David Furnish, partner of Sir Elton John, likened it to a giant spaceship.

Actress Juliette Lewis, currently starring in the West End production of Fool For Love, said: "It's a great venue for a party, perfect for playing raging disco music in. It makes you feel floating and swollen, parallel to the moon in the sky." And no, she is not pregnant.

Among the guests on the day that the death of Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett was announced was the group's David Gilmour, who was there with his wife Polly. But he was not in the mood for talking about his old bandmate.

Also at the party were actress Tilda Swinton (pavilion opinion: "I hope nobody pops it"), Zadie Smith ("Fantastic"), and former Radio 1 DJ and Celebrity Big Brother contestant Lisa l'Anson ("I wouldn't particularly want the pavilion. What would I do with it? Throw a wedding?").

Artists present included Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley and Grayson Perry: non-artists included Salman Rushdie, former Chelsea footballer Graham Le Saux, Rhys Ifans, Kirsty Young, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay, Tom Parker Bowles, Martha Lane Fox, Jefferson Hack and Saffron Aldridge.
