Putting out the right Viberts

After 28 EPs and LPs, 30 remixes and appearances on more than 60 compilations, Luke Vibert's first LP for Warp Records, YosepH, is about to drop (October 13).

It's a surprise that this is only the first album, as Warp's currency is turning dance music on its head through such mind-bending talent as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and Autechre. And Vibert is a master of deconstructing dance music's genres and refashioning elements into accessible, yet out there, tunes.

Whether it's bootlegs of Craig David's Seven Days filled with feedback and white noise or the surgically precise d'n'b mixed with unexpected vocals and crazy loops of his Plug guise, it's not uncommon to laugh out loud when listening to Vibert productions.

YosepH, however, feels like Vibert's taken a sledgehammer to the dance music spectrum and smashed it to smithereens. He's then put it back together in a seeming hotchpotch of styles which nevertheless is both engaging and thought-provoking.

Take Slowfast, which flickers along over low-slung bass, or how Vibert imbues the grating industrialism of Synthax with perky bounce.

Vibert, it seems, is sticking two fingers up to dance music's peculiar obsession with genres - who says if you rave to jungle you can't like techno or if you're a garage head you can't appreciate electronica? Certainly not Luke Vibert.
