The writers' unprecedented public protest is another headache for Mr Pickard, who has been under pressure over the failure of Celebrity Wrestling and poor ratings for Celebrity Love Island.
However, ITV1 finally had some good news about Celebrity Love Island when it beat its Channel 4 rival Big Brother in the ratings.
An estimated 3.6million were watching the programme on Wednesday as former footballer Lee Sharpe and glamour model Abi Titmuss intensified their romance. That was almost 18 per cent of the total TV audience at that time. Big Brother was seen by 3.4million.
ITV1 was bracing itself for more accusations that its £15million reality show was dragging the channel downmarket after an incident between another two contestants.
Playboy model Nikki Ziering told former Hollyoaks actor Paul Danan to remove his microphone and follow her to the ladies' lavatories. Danan emerged four minutes later bragging about their encounter.
ITV yesterday defended the decision to move Coronation Street.
'Sometimes programmes need to support the schedule and on this occasion we are supporting Celebrity Love Island,' a spokesman said.
Another hour-long episode of Coronation Street starting at 8.30pm is planned for next Monday.
