Pete Doherty has told how he found himself in hospital after being spiked by a hedgehog.

The Libertines singer shared a snap from his hospital bed as he told his followers about the infected injury.

He tweeted: “A picture me in a hospital bed with an infected hedgehog spike wound thank you to the wonderful men and women who work within the NHS.

“What absolute angels and a million times they deserve our respect and thanks.”

Doherty, 40, then shared a blurry image of himself looking exhausted as he held up his bandaged hand.

He was flooded with messages of support from fans online sending their best wishes.

One user wrote: “How did u manage to get spiked by a hedgehog @Petedoherty ??? Hope you feel better soon! - The NHS @NHSMillion is the absolute best-they'll soon have you up and about.”

“Hedgehog spike wound?!?! Who knew! Get well soon fella,” said a second.

A third added: “Such a sweetheart! I hope you are feeling better soon.”

The musician was due to appear on BBC Radio 5 Live, but presenter Nihal Arthanayake addressed the injury on-air, revealing that Doherty had been spiked by the animal on his finger.

“Pete Doherty is now in hospital having the infected hedgehog spine removed from his finger,” he said. “We wish Pete well because whatever has happened is serious enough that he has not been able to make it.”

The injury comes just days after Doherty’s new group Peter Doherty and the Puta Madres released their self-titled debut album.

Doherty recently told NME that he is also working on a fifth studio album to follow-up The Libertines’ 2015 release, Anthems for Doomed Youth.
