Oscars winners 2020: Parasite makes history with surprise Best Picture win as Renee Zellweger is crowned Best Actress

Parasite has made history as the first ever film not in English to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

The critically acclaimed film, which was the first Oscar-nominated South Korean movie, also picked up the awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film, while Bong Joon-Ho was a surprise winner in the Best Director category, beating Sir Sam Mendes.

Sir Sam's World War One epic had been considered a favourite in the Best Picture race, but still managed to pick up three awards.

1917, which stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman as two soldiers tasked with carrying a message across no man’s land, was a hit in the technical categories, picking up the Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects statuettes, as well as a second Oscar for legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Renee Zellweger received her second Oscar for her lead performance as Judy Garland in Hollywood biopic Judy, the crowning achievement in a successful awards season, while Joaquin Phoenix was crowned Best Actor for his role in comic book adaptation Joker.

Phoenix, who has used his acceptance speeches to draw attention to a range of social issues, spoke at length about the environment and called for a "fight against injustice."

He became tearful towards the end as he recalled a lyric written by his late brother River Phoenix, who died at the age of 23 in 1993.

Sir Elton John picked up a second Best Original Song Oscar, his first shared with long-term collaborator Bernie Taupin, for I'm Gonna Love Me Again from Rocketman.

Sir Elton said that Taupin had been "the constant thing in my life, when I was screwed up, when I was normal" before dedicating the win to his two "beautiful boys," sons Zachary and Elijah.

Brad Pitt was the first winner of the night, taking home his first acting Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood.

The star, who plays a stunt man in Quentin Tarantino's latest film, thanked his director and "all the people I've met along the way" including co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, before suggesting that the movie's title summed up his career trajectory. He ultimately dedicated his win to his children, "who colour everything I do."

Laura Dern was another first time winner, picking up the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her role in Marriage Story.

In a sweet acceptance speech, she dedicated her win to her parents Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern, both of whom are actors, and joked that the trophy was the "best birthday present ever."
