Mel Gibson could be directing the next Suicide Squad film.

The controversial Hollywood star is being ‘courted’ by Warner Bros to helm the DC Comics sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gibson has made a name for himself behind the camera with the likes of The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto.

His latest directorial effort, World War II film Hacksaw Ridge, has received critical acclaim and awards nominations – including Oscar nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Andrew Garfield.

The film has marked a comeback for Gibson, whose troubled personal life in recent years had diminished his reputation in Hollywood.

THR claims that no official offer has been made for Gibson to take on Suicide Squad 2, and that negotiations are in the early stages.

The comic book film will be a follow-up to the 2016 blockbuster, which focused on a team of super-villains in the DC Universe – including The Joker, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot.
