Gillian Anderson has thrown her hat into the ring to be the next James Bond – or ‘Jane’ Bond.

The X-Files actress, 47, looks keen to succeed Daniel Craig and take the title of the first ever female 007 agent.

Anderson tweeted a mocked up poster of herself in the iconic role to her 400,000 followers.

“It's Bond. Jane Bond,” she captioned the image. “Thanks for all the votes! (And sorry, don't know who made poster but I love it!) #NextBond.”

Anderson is not currently in the running to take over from Craig who has enjoyed four outings as the British spy in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.

The actor is believed to have stepped away from the Bond franchise, despite being offered ‘£68 million’, according to reports.

A source told Mail Online: “Daniel is done – pure and simple – he told top brass at MGM after Spectre. They threw huge amounts of money at him, but it just wasn’t what he wanted.

“He had told people after shooting that this would be his final outing, but the film company still felt he could come around after Spectre if he was offered a money deal.”

Idris Elba, Aidan Turner and Tom Hiddleston are among the rumoured favourites with bets on Hiddleston suspended at one bookmaker after a significant sum of money was placed on him.

The Night Manager actor recently described being rumoured to take on the iconic role as "weird".

“I’m having unreal conversations with people about this because I don’t know where the rumours have sprung from,” he told the Daily Mail.

“It’s difficult, because everyone has very strong opinions about Bond, and who should play him. My name is just an idea in people’s minds, yet it’s becoming overwhelming.

“I have no power to stop it, but I wish I could convince everyone that the whole thing is news to me.”
