Daisy Ridley is ‘in talks’ to play Ophelia in a new take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The Force Awakens star is reportedly being lined up to take on the iconic role in a film adaptation of Lisa Klein’s novel.

Told from the perspective of the tragic character, the story imagines a world in which Ophelia did not die, but is secretly married to Hamlet.

According to Entertainment Weekly, British star Ridley is in ‘final negotiations’ over the part, as confirmed by independent distributor Covert Media.

If Ridley lands the role, she will be starring opposite Hollywood heavyweight Naomi Watts, who has already signed up to play Queen Gertrude.

A press release for the forthcoming film describes it as being a “pulse-pounding insight into a perilous world of murder and betrayal.”

Ridley was recently in the running of the role of Lara Croft in the forthcoming reboot, but lost out to Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander.

The Star Wars actress is currently shooting scenes for Episode VIII, after which she will start filming new fantasy thriller Kolma.
