Beyonce has been compared to the “Holy Ghost” after she dropped out of attending this year’s Met Gala.

The Crazy in Love singer, 36, sparked a flurry of hilarious memes as fans joked she was at the religious-themed bash in 'spirit'.

Beyoncé had reportedly planned to attend in a custom outfit by Peter Dundas, according to Entertainment Tonight, but pulled out after husband Jay-Z decided to whisk her away on holiday,

“Jay Z surprised her with a trip because he felt she needed to relax before her tour,” a source told the publication.

Fans tweeted pictures of shadows on the red carpet and joked that Beyoncé was “killing it”.

Others were disappointed at her no-show, with many claiming this year's Heavenly Bodies theme was created for the singer who wore a gold angel inspired gown and headdress at the 2017 Grammy Awards.

One fan tweeted: “This year’s theme for the #MetGala was literally made for Beyoncé,,,like she is a heavenly body so she needs to come and serve us heavenly body, heavenly hair, heavenly looks and shake the heavenly table!!! AMEN.”

Many accused her of appropriation and branded the John Galliano-designed outfit “disgusting”.

Katy Perry made sure to stick to the theme and rocked up wearing six-foot high angel wings while Sarah Jessica Parker fashioned a nativity scene on her headdress.
