A city Franco tried to hide

To many people, Pedro Almodovar is the greatest living Spanish film-maker. He was also a pioneer in La Movida Madrilena, the outburst of creativity and hedonism that hit Madrid after the death of Franco in 1976. Alberto Garcia-Aix chronicled that revolutionary period, taking shots of artists and the street gangs that flourished once censorship and oppression were lifted.

Although a winner of Spain's foremost culture award, the Premio Nacional, this is Garcia-Aix's first exhibition in England. His images capture teddy boys and bikers as well as the actors and models that flourished in the late Seventies and early Eighties. Carefully composed shots of street life capture the vitality of the city as its young citizens discovered the benefits and dangers that freedom brought. Since those days, the visual chronicler of the Movida has matured into an intimate portrait photographer. Garcia-Aix continues to reign in Spain.
