Fans have started gathering outside Prince’s home in Minnesota after the pop icon’s death was announced.

Flowers have been placed on a fence at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen.

KSTP-TV reporter Jessica Miles tweeted a picture of a dozen people standing outside the property as tributes pour in for the star.

Video from Lindsay Guentzel shows journalists and cameramen setting up equipment opposite the estate following the announcement.

US celebrity gossip website TMZ reported police were investigating a death at the estate after responding to a medical emergency at 9.43am.

The star’s death was confirmed by his publicist, who said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57.

"There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time."

His death comes six days after the singer’s plane made an emergency landing in Illinois to take him to a hospital.

A representative of the singer said he had a bout of flu at the time.

Celebrities including Robbie Williams and Samuel L. Jackson are among those to pay tribute.
