Melania Trump has appeared on the cover of the Mexican edition of Vanity Fair amid rising tensions over Donald Trump’s pledge to build a wall on the country’s border with the US.

The new First Lady appears on the cover of the magazine in a pose as though she is eating from a bowl filled with jewellery.

In the photo, she wraps a silver necklace from the bowl around a fork like spaghetti as she stares into the camera.

The magazine’s release came just one day after the US President signed executive orders to increase the number of border patrol enforcement officers and lay the ground work for building a wall on the border of Mexico.

Throughout the presidential election campaign, Mr Trump repeatedly pledged to build the border wall to keep illegal immigrants out of the US.

Mexican’s President Enrique Pena Nieto has scrapped a planned trip to Washington to meet the new president, who had also demanded that America’s southern neighbour pay for the wall.

The photo of Mrs Trump and accompanying interview originally appeared in GQ magazine in the Spring.

Conde Nast is the parent company of both Vanity Fair Mexico and GQ.

The release of the cover sparked outrage among some people in Mexico who took to Twitter to express their dismay.

One person wrote: “We demand Vanity Fair Mexico not to distribute their magazine with Melania Trump on the cover; it's a mockery and humiliation for Mexico.”

While another said: “Melania Trump eating a plate of diamonds for breakfast on the cover of Vanity Fair Mexico – what a joke.”

A woman, tweeting under the name, Antonella wrote: “Melania Trump on the cover of Vanity Fair Mexico is the new definition of irony in the Royal Spanish Academy dictionary.”
