Japan earthquake: Tsunami warning after 7.3 magnitude earthquake hits off coast of Fukushima

A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan.

The quake hit just off the coast of Fukushima and not far from its Daiichi nuclear power plant.

People have been warned that waves of up to three metres could sweep the nation’s northern Pacific coast if a tsunami is triggered.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

It warned people along the coast to move to higher ground.

Fukushima is north of Tokyo and home to the nuclear power plant that was destroyed by a huge tsunami following an offshore earthquake in 2011.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury so far on Monday at about 10pm UK time.
