Barcelona explosion in apartment block kills one and injures 14

An explosion in a block of flats is believed to have killed one person and injured many more near Barcelona.

Flames were seen bursting from a seven-storey block in the Spanish seaside resort of Premia de Mar.

A Barcelona emergency services spokeswoman said: “The explosion happened at 8.25am and affected 15 people, 14 of whom were injured and one who died.”

Two of the injured people are believed to be in a serious condition.

Local media have reported that the apartment block has been evacuated.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.

The person who died, believed to be a middle-aged woman, lived on the second floor of the block
