Dramatic footage released by officials in Cape Town shows the moment a gunman attempted to ambush a police officer on the side of a busy road.
Officer Nizaam Alexander was carrying out a routine traffic stop on the N2 road in Cape Town when he was surprised by an armed man, who walked up behind him and demanded he hand over his gun.
The gunman then opens fire, hitting the policeman in the back as he reached for his own weapon.
The shocking clip shows the officer take cover behind the car and return fire.
The exchange of fire was captured on the police car's dashboard camera. It is thought the gunman escaped unharmed.
After the gunfire, the police officer reportedly finishing writing the traffic ticket before going to hospital.
He suffered a flesh wound, but was released from hospital shortly after the attack.
He was later given a bravery award.
