Donald Trump has said he does not "have to prepare very much" ahead of his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un and that it would be about "attitude".

Speaking at a joint White House press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Mr Trump told reporters the historic meeting, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, would be about "attitude" and "willingness".

If the summit goes ahead, Mr Trump will be the first ever incumbent American president to sit down face-to-face with a North Korean leader.

He said: "I think I'm very well prepared. I don't think I have to prepare very much.

"It's about attitude...it's about a willingness to get things done but I think I've been preparing for this summit for a long time...as has the other side.

"I think they've been preparing for a long time also.

"This isn't a question of preparation, it's a question of whether or not people want it to happen...and we'll know that very quickly.

Asked about his long-term hopes for US-North Korea relations, he said: "It's gonna be much more than a photo-op, it's gonna be a process, I've told you that many times before.

"I think it's not a one-meeting-deal - it'd be wonderful if it were, y'know, they've been doing this for a long time...there's been a lot of enemies out there.

"A lot of dislike, a lot of hatred between countries.

"This will not be just a photo-op, this will be at a minimum...will start with perhaps a good relationship and that's something that's very important toward the ultimate making of a deal."

"I'd love to say it could happen in one deal, maybe it can - they have to de-nuke. If they don't denuclearise, that will not be acceptable."

The White House confirmed on Friday chief diplomat Mike Pompeo would travel to South Korea to brief other Asian leaders on the outcome of the summit.
