British woman dies while having cosmetic surgery in Thailand

A British woman has died while under anaesthesia during a cosmetic procedure in Thailand, authorities said.

The 24-year-old woman, who has not been named, stopped breathing during the operation Thursday evening, it was reported.

Authorities said the patient had cosmetic surgery at the same clinic earlier this month but was not happy with results and was having a corrective procedure.

Sompob Sansiri, the doctor who performed the operations, was not certified for cosmetic surgery, Boonruang Triruangworawat, director-general of the health service support department, said.

"There was an attempt to resuscitate her but ultimately she did not survive," he said. "We are looking into why it happened."

Police arrested Sompob and pressed charges of causing death by reckless endangerment, police said.

Sompob could face additional charges relating to illegal medical surgery from the health service support department.

Mr Boonruang said the clinic will be shut for 60 days.
