A 12-year-old boy with leukaemia saw his dream of “blowing stuff up” come true after he was allowed to spend the day with police.

Declan, who is in remission from the blood cancer, was taken on a training day with Australian police after getting in touch with the Make-A-Wish foundation, which aims to make dreams come true to seriously ill children.

He spent the day with the Specialist Response Group and was taken through police scenarios with the chance to detonate explosives.

Sergeant Peter Murphy told ABC News that explosives were the policing team’s speciality and Declan had enjoyed specific traning.

"He's got an aptitude," he said. "I'm not sure what he actually expected, but once he started functioning a couple ... he was getting into it.

"He was pretty excited about it but I think the family got a bit of a kick out of it too."

The Make-A-Wish foundation organises organises special events for children with life-threatening illnesses.

As part of his special experience, Declan also met Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove ad Parliament House.
