Forty-four percent of Americans surveyed said Mr Obama was the best or second best president of their lifetime.

When narrowed down to generations, 62 percent of millennials said Obama was one of the best commanders in chief.

Bill Clinton came in second place with 33 percent and Ronald Reagan came in third with 32 percent.

The poll was conducted during June 5 to 12 by the Pew Research Centre, a US think tank. More than 2,000 people took part in the survey.

Mr Reagan was the most popular among Generation Xers with 45 and 42 percent voting him the best president of their lifetime.

Only 19 percent of those polled said that Donald Trump had been their best or second best president.

Mr Trump landed in the UK on Thursday as part of a working visit.

Before starting on his journey to the UK, Mr Trump said that the UK is in "turmoil" and also mentioned his warm relationship with Boris Johnson.

Asked about Mr Johnson's quitting Cabinet, the president added: "Boris Johnson is a friend of mine.

"He's been very, very supportive and very nice to me. Maybe I'll speak to him when I get over there."

Around 50,000 people are expected to descend on central London to protest his visit on Friday.

Demonstrators will make their way through the city on the 'Stop Trump' march before a large rally takes place in Trafalgar Square.
