Around the world in 962 sights in £1m package holiday

It is the ultimate package holiday — but you’ll need deep pockets and an understanding boss to book it.

For a price of almost £1 million, adventurous travellers will get a remarkable “bucket list” tour of almost 1,000 of the world’s most famous tourist sites — from the Great Wall of China to the Grand Canyon.

The two-year “trip of a lifetime” aims to take in all 962 Unesco World Heritage Sites. Its £990,000 cost includes business or first-class travel on all flights and accommodation at some of the world’s most famous luxury hotels, including the George V in Paris and the New York Plaza — as well as a £5,000 donation to Unesco.

Travellers will visit Mexico’s ancient mountain city of Monte Alban, Cambodia’s exotic Angkor temples, the Forbidden City in Beijing and Spain’s Alhambra palace in Granada. It will also include the UK’s 28 World Heritage Sites, among which are Stonehenge and the Tower of London.

The holiday is being organised by Kensington-based Hurlingham Travel. Andrew Barker, managing director, said: “This is certainly the most exciting trip we have ever organised and is the most remarkable travel adventure imaginable.”

The trip will take travellers in the footsteps of the many celebrities who have been drawn to some of the world’s greatest architectural and heritage treasures.

The pyramids of Giza in Egypt attract about four million visitors a year, including former French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni, who visited in 2007.

Perched more than 8,000 feet above sea level, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru has also attracted a host of celebrities, including Hollywood stars Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Another leg on the journey takes in the city of Petra, carved into the rocks in Jordan, where Madonna visited in 2009. Some of the sites, such as the Armenian monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin and the historic mosque city of Bagerhat in Bangladesh, are less well known.

A handful, such as those in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are likely to prove too dangerous to tick off.
