Student 'wore racist slogan at Leicester University event'

An investigation has been launched after photos emerged of university students wearing t-shirts with anti-Semitic slogans written on them.

In one photo, a student is pictured with "Hitler wanted my kind alive" written on the back of his t-shirt.

The photo is believed to be from a "white t-shirt social" at the University of Leicester, an event where students wear white t-shirts and then write on each other.

A second photo, said to be from a separate event at the same university, shows a student wearing a yellow vest with "I'm a Nazi" written on it.

Leicester University student Shayna Wise-Till posted the photos on her Facebook profile.

She wrote: "I’m not usually one to get too political on Facebook, but with the current climate at my university, I feel compelled to speak up."

The student said the pictures demonstrated "a clear pattern" as a committee member of the university's Jewish society was sent the white t-shirt photo three weeks ago, while the yellow vest photo had been posted on Snapchat last week.

Ms Wise-Till criticised Leicester University for allowing a "hostile environment" for Jewish students.

"The University has allowed a hostile environment for Jewish students to flourish, and so long as things like this continue to fly under the radar of the majority of students, nothing will improve," she said.

In a statement Leicester University's Student's Union said they are investigating an incident at an "unauthorised" white t-shirt social.

It said: "The Students’ Union is investigating an incident involving behaviour by an individual attending a student group event, which appears to be an unauthorised white t-shirt social, where anti-Semitic language was written on a top.
