London Weather: Snow forecast for this weekend

London is set to see some snow this weekend as parts of the UK brace for potentially disrupting weather conditions.

Temperatures will plunge to a chilly -2C on Sunday with the risk of sleet and snow falling across the capital.

The Met Office also confirmed that rain could turn into snow overnight on Saturday when the mercury is set to fall to -1C.

The weekend will be much colder than Thursday and Friday when temperatures are due to reach a mild 10C in the day.

Parts of Scotland were blanketed by up to 19cm of snow in just 24 hours last week, while areas in south-west England recorded almost 30mm of rainfall.

Wintry conditions will continue this week across Scotland and northern England before cold air pushes across the whole of the UK.

Snow and ice have already caused disruption this week, closing some transport routes. National Severe Weather warnings have been issued throughout the coming week, including an amber warning for snow in Scotland on Friday and Saturday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: “Up to the weekend, the forecast is dominated by snow for Scotland and northern England. The Met Office has issued a number of weather warnings, including an amber warning for Scotland, where up to 30cm of snowfall could affect higher routes and communities.

"A number of other snow, ice and rain warnings remain in force for the northern half of the UK for Thursday and Friday.”

January was the coldest month in a decade with an average temperature of 2.2 C.

It was the coldest month since 2010 when the average UK January temperature was 0.9C.
